December 2016 Update
I begin this President’s letter on a sad note. As most of you know by now, Mary Helen Windell died of an apparent heart attack on November 27th. She was a long-time member of the SLC and a beloved member of our community. I have heard from many of you with stories about her compassion and kindness. She will be missed. Please keep her family in your thoughts and prayers. More details to follow later regarding a service being planned in celebration of her life.
On a brighter note, we have a fantastic program planned for our December luncheon on the 8th. Always a crowd favorite and in keeping with December tradition, the Blaine High School Choir will be performing for us. But in a break from our traditional venue, Semiahmoo Resort has offered us their ballroom at no charge! The ballroom can seat up to 300 people, so we are opening up the invitation to spouses and any other guests you wish to invite. This will also be a fundraiser for the SLC. You will find more details in the newsletter below, but in a nutshell many of our local artists, along with the Seattle-based organization Glassybaby, will be selling their crafts. This is a great time to do your Christmas shopping, and 10% of all revenue will be donated to the SLC which will in turn go back to our local community. We didn’t have the details nailed down before we sent out the eVite, so it lists the usual starting time as 11:30; however to give people more time to shop and socialize, we are instead beginning our mixer at 11:00 (there will also be a cash bar). If you haven’t already, please RSVP as soon as possible so that we will know how many attendees to plan for. This is a special one-time offer from the Resort – don’t miss out!
The December luncheon is also the Club’s annual meeting at which the election takes place for the 2017 Board. You should have received the proposed slate, which was emailed to you and included in the Club’s newsletter and website. In addition to the absentee ballots already received, the vote for the 2017 Board will be taken from the members present by a show of hands. Additionally, Patti Lulu won the drawing for a free lunch, and we will be drawing again from those members attending in December for a free lunch in January.
We are in the beginning stages of our annual membership drive, which will kick off in full swing on January 1st. However, if you would like to renew now or sign up a new member, we will have a membership table set up at the luncheon to take your check and membership form. You can also mail your check and membership form to Marie Wallace (see below for details). The cost is $40 for renewing members and $46 for new members (the $6.00 is a one-time charge to help offset the cost of the roster cover and name tag).
Hope to see you all at the luncheon in the Semiahmoo Resort Blakely/Cypress ballroom on December 8th beginning at 11:00 – the more the merrier!

Results on the Vote:
Admend the By-Laws and Club Name Change
Many thanks to all of you who gave your time to considering, commenting and voting on the SLC Board's proposal to amend the Club's By-Laws, including a proposal to change the Club's name to Semiahmoo Women's Club. Per the current By-Laws, the amendment required approval by two-thirds of the members present at the meeting and all absentee ballots received. We received a total of 55 votes with a clear two-thirds majority for the amendments including the name change, so the proposed amendments and name change passed.
The new By-Laws and name change will take effect on January 1, 2017, pending approval by the State (required because of our 501 (c) (3) charitable organization status; however, because our purpose and activities haven't changed, we don't anticipate any issues in that regard). Until the new By-Laws take effect, we will continue to use the name Semiahmoo Ladies Club on our website and other club documents.
2017 SWC Board Nominations
The Nominating Committee has compiled a slate of officers to present to the general membership with the membership voting at the annual membership meeting held during the December 8th luncheon. The slate reflects the new Board structure in the amended By-Laws. If you desire to vote but will not be present at the December meeting, you may vote absentee. You can do that by emailing your vote either for the entire Board or for just individuals. Please return your response to the election committee chairperson, Joan Standridge at email@example.com The deadline for voting absentee is December 3rd.

All members are welcome to join us! We are taking a book group holiday so will not be meeting in December. Our next meeting will be Thursday, January 26th, 3:30 at the Blue Heron Grill. We will be discussing two books by Fredrik Backman - My Grandmother Asked Me to Tell You She's Sorry and A Man Called Ove.
Reminders for the monthly meeting are emailed a few days prior to Book Group. New members are always welcome! If you are interested in joining the group or no longer wish to be on the email list, contact Lora Crawford at LL2crawford@aol.com or Pattie LuLu at firstname.lastname@example.org

Wednesday Coffee Break
Donna Leach is our weekly hostess for an informal coffee gathering in the Blue Heron Grill at 10:00 each Wednesday morning. This is a drop in social time with no need to RSVP. Contact Donna at (360) 371-3864 for more information.
Botanical Goddesses Gardening Group
"A beautiful garden is sunshine on a cloudy day."
The Gardening Group is now in hiatus until February.
SLC Walking Group
Over the summer, new member Sandy Weir attempted to organize a morning walking group. Regretfully, she feels it is necessary to disband due to a lack of interest. It seems many wanted to walk, they just couldn't find a schedule that would work for a group during the busy summer months. We do thank Sandy for trying!
